Why doesn't iChat offer a Mail Notification service?

Wouldn't it be nice if iChat had a Mail Notifier like GOOGLE Notifiers built in?

iChat doesn't offer a lot of things, Apple many believe do this on purpose. iChat didn't until recently support tabbed chat windows.
