Why does the Mars Lander take photos in black and white only?

sending a high def image from mars back to the US would take a long time due to lander bandwidth limitations, which at this point need to be used for system operations. NASA sent grayscale images to quickly get images to the media to stir up excitement over the success of the Phoenix.

Expect high-def color images soon.
