I'm not a supervisor, but I think that a good answer to such a question would be the following:
- Instead of "telling" a supervisor what to do, I would pose my response as a suggestion of a possible solution. Rather than instructing a supervisor on what you perceive as the "right" thing to do, I would mention a possible course of action that the supervisor might want to consider. I would explain my reasoning for suggestion this - I've used it before and it's worked in the past, I think it would be the easiest/fastest/most professional way to act, etc. I might even pose a couple of different courses of action to the supervisor and let him pick one, so he still feels like he made the final decision.
