Great question,now that the term is gaining popularity these days. Before I can answer what Social Media Marketing is we must first define Social Media, and then we'll add marketing in to tie it all together.

Social Media refers to tools, websites, or platforms that allow people to connect and share information in a community manner.

Examples include: Wikipedia, MySpace, Digg, Facebook, Upcoming, and even nobosh Answers.

Social media is the “wisdom of crowds" approach to connecting users interests in a collaborative way.

Social Media Marketing's objective is to obtain Social Media exposure in a smart, legit way that doesn't get your site blocked or permanently banned.

Why is this such a crucial strategy? Obtaining exposure on popular social media provides not only a short term spike in traffic, but long lasting traffic gains. You get your brand out there in front of thousands, if not millions.

So how do you perform SMM? That's another question entirely...
