Scrum is an agile software development method for project management. Although Scrum was intended to be for management of software development projects, it can be used in running maintenance teams, or as a program management approach: Scrum of Scrums. -Wikipedia

The ScrumMaster is responsible for the following:
1. Ensuring the team follows the Rules of Scrum
2. Protecting the team from overcommitment
3. Running the Sprint Planning Sessions
4. Running the Daily Scrum (15 Minute Standup)

The ScrumMaster role is usually filled by either a project manager, product manager or engineering lead. In some cases the ScrumMaster can be a member of the team, but not ideally.

The only definition of 'scrum' that I'm aware of is in rugby. Here's the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_scrum

I hope that helps!

Watch this video recorded at a Google tech talk. Then video is a 1 hour talk given by Ken Schwaber, who one of the founders of Scrum.

He is a fantastic presenter. I recommend you watch the entire video. You'll find the video inspirational and likely a more rewarding experience towards learning Scrum than you'll get at your company.
