What are some tips for successfully negotiating for a bonus?

I'm meeting with some higher-ups soon for a yearly performance evaluation and I want to be ready to ask for a raise in my salary. Any tips on negotiating, proper etiquette, etc. would be appreciated.

I think some of the tips you need will depend on your specific industry, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

- Most bonuses are based on job performance, not simply time with the company; a brief portfolio of your accomplishments over the last year will provide tangible evidence that you deserve a pay raise

- Most bonuses range from 3% to 5%; go in expecting something in this range (Sites that compare local and regional salaries for your position might be helpful here too, like www.salary.com)

- Make sure you schedule the meeting on a day/time that won't be stressful - directly before a big deadline (whether it is a deadline of yours or of your boss) is not the time to meet

- Think about how your company is doing financially. Can they even afford to bump up your salary? If not, perhaps you should start exploring elsewhere, even if only for growth opportunities

- Get what the boss says in writing and follow-up!

Think beyond money and go after company ownership, added vacation time, working from home, company car, expenses, etc...
