What are hard assets?

I heard on CNBC this morning a analyst recommending getting into hard assets. I've never heard of such a thing, hard assets. What are they? Where can I learn more? How can I purchase them? Should I purchase hard assets?

Hard Assets refer to the following: gold, precious metals, petroleum and coal products, industrial chemicals and metals, timber, paper products, and real estate.

You can buy these items by calling your broker or by using your broker's online interface. Look into purchasing a Hard Assets Mutual Fund if you determine that your portfolio is missing hard assets. I won't make a recommendation as I don't know your current portfolio allocation.
