That question is difficult to answer. They were created during the same period, but took two different paths. While Microsoft has a larger market share, Apple seems to have a cultish following that is driving the brands market take over. Microsoft lacks this following, but still seems to dominate the PC market in business. While Microsoft wants to copy the success of the iPod in the personal MP3 market, Apple has to use MS products (Apple versions of Office) to function in the business and academic world.

Both are good companies, but neither can be termed "the best" in terms of innovation.

IMO, Microsoft recently (say past 10 years) haven't done too much innovation, BUT have seen it quote early in other companies, then has purchased them.

Apple has managed to innovate in two main areas, the iPod and iPhone. The Mac OSX OS is good, but is based on UNIX (BSD if I rememeber correctly), with a nice a shiney front end. Linux won 't have the same impact on the desktop because the factions within the developer 'gangs'.

Both companies have made innovative products historically, but I think in the future, it will be smaller startups & universities/research centres. Don't forget Apple & Microsoft will small once.
