Is there a way in GMAIL to view only unread messages? A filter perhaps?

There are a couple tricks I'll share:

View your unread messages as a RSS Feed:
http://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/unread/

Bookmark this link which is unread messages only:
http://mail.google.com/mail/#search/is%3Aunread

Or simply type the following in the search box and click Search Mail "is:unread" - without the quotes
