I'm contemplating exporting established U.S. brand names that I think would be a hit in other countries. Is it illegal or would it infringe on any copyrights if I use the retailer's product images and product descriptions on my own site if I reference the source? To assist keeping overhead low, I more than likely will not be keeping my own inventory, rather purchasing items individually from the retailers once they are purchased from me. That also means that I won't be receiving any kind of bulk discounts.
Thank you for your advisement!

Copyrights generally exist as a matter of law on all completed "works." There is no formal filing or registration requirement for copyrights like there is for Patents. The use of copyrighted materials depends on the owner's terms and conditions. If the owner is the retailer, you must either obtain permission or use copyrighted material in accordance with the retailers established policies. If the owner of the images is the manufacturer, their policies and permission would control how images and the like can be used. Merely crediting the source will not necessarily keep you from infringing on a copyright.
In either case, both the manufacturer and retailer should be agreeable to your use of the images since it furthers their goals as well by selling more product. If you do some research, you may find that they have published terms under which the copyrighted materials can be used by resellers.
