I need information on how to pay off my husbands credit card bill. The company sent it to a lawyer for collection.

About 7 years ago my family had a horrible experience. My 16 year old was in a horrific car crash and I was out on medical leave from my job. I was not able to go back to work for some many years and so our bills started piling up and we had to let some go. The credit card bill was one. Now I am working part time, my husband is disabled and in a wheelchair all times and my child is in a wheelchair at all times (except now she is 25 years old). I am now trying to get our credit back on track except the credit card company sent the bill to a lawyer and we tried to get the company to settle with us but would not. Now they are threatening to garnish my husbands wages (which he doesn't work anymore) or they will put a lien on our property. We had the home and some bills consolidated to make it easier on us, we thought this credit card bill was one of the bills but to late we found out it wasn't.
The bill has assumed interest and finance charges to the point of $8000.00. I don't mind paying the correct bill which was around $4500.00 but the interest is ridiculous. Can the credit card company garnish my wages and what can I do?

I sympathize for your situation. I will say that you are correct Credit Card Interest Rates are insane. The government greatly needs to cap and legislate on that issue. That being said, you did agree to their terms when signing up. The interest is how they make their money. You will need to pay the full bill and they will go after you in every way they can, wage garnishes etc.

its scary that's why so many financial advisor's advise against credit cards. You can call your company and claim undue hardship and ask for a reduction but your chances of this happening are very unlikely, but exceptions are possible. Many people are forced to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

  1. 2tiredlady: Thanks TonyLiu. Bankruptcy is not one of my answers as I am trying to get our credit straight. I paid off my credit card with this same company; since it is in his name can they garnish my wages if I am the only one working? We haven't used this account since 2001. I cut up the cards and threw them away and even told the company I was doing that.
  2. 2tiredlady: Hello TonyLiu:I went to my attorney and gave him the judgement papers,he called the other attorney and explained my situation to them which explained to his client and they settled for far less than expected. Sometimes it's best to just let the attorneys handle things. Thanks problem solved.
