I invented a new type of chair(www.thehealthchair.com) for people that spend a lot of time sitting. Any suggestions on how to get the word out?

  1. drgary: What I am asking is how do I let the world know on an inventors budget? They are already sold throughout the world but on a smaller scale than I want. I do not want to go the conventional route through distributors - I sell direct to the end user so I am looking for a referral type business model. Any ideas on how to do this?

Hi Dr. Gary,

This is the first time I've heard of your product, very interesting. How have you worked to get the word out so far?

One suggestion I have is to start getting product evangelists. Run a promotion on site's like nobosh Answers. And send out some free chairs. What you'll want to do is make sure that the free chairs you are sending out are being used in public places.

Take for example my friend Gabriel, who works at Google in Santa Monica. If you sent her a free chair under the requirement that she took the chair to work, just think what a strong product evangelist she would become in a company with employees that love the newest and greatest, and have the money to burn.

Marketing via product evangelists is a new growing trend. Just a few weeks ago CBS news ran a segment on BzzAgent. BzzAgent is a company that pairs companies with consumers who become product evangelists however, they call them BzzAgent's. The company sends BzzAgent's their product and the Agent's job is to promote the product to friends and family. What usually ends up happening is that the promotion comes naturally as it is a new and exciting product such as yours.
Is there anywhere in the Los Angeles area where a curious consumer such as myself could test drive the chair?

    I have done what you suggested so far - I have been looking for Influencers. I need more of them! What has worked the best so far was a guy who purchased a HealthChair named John Mauldin - he is a Financial Advisor that writes a weekly email newsletter. He fell in love with the HealthChair and told his email clients - 1 million of them! I would like to talk to Gabriel if you think she would be interested. I will look into BzzAgents.

    I briefly looked into BzzAgents and I think if I can find the right ones - it might work nicely.
  5. drgary: I do not have an Outlet in LA - I ship direct to the user - but I will be in Las Vegas next week at a Ergonomics Show. The HealthChair come in a big box - complete - no assembly - just take it out of the box and it's ready to go. I have found the Outlet Route very frustrating so I have elected not to go there right now. We can probably work something out to get you a chair to try.

A lot of companies also have an ergonomics lessons (or on-staff ergonomists). It might be worth contacting some of the major corporations in your area to see if they regularly hold classes or seminars on this topic. You might be able to make an appearance at these classes or even lead one yourself that gives you a chance to promote your chair. Perhaps you can even sell in bulk to the company...?

    Thanks for your input - the week after Thanksgiving is the National Ergonimics Convention in Las Vegas - I will have a booth there! Ergonomists are Influencers in there corporations and that is one route we have been working on . We currently supply Sandia National Labs and Los Alamos National Labs with many of their Ergonomic Chairs. I would like to work with Select Comfort - if anyone knows the right person there - they have the Sleep Number Bed - I have the Sit Number Chair.

Drgary - I have some suggestions that I guarantee you would be of tremendous help to you. No pitch here. I will just pass on some of what I have learned over the last year of immersing myself into online marketing. If it works, just send me a chair once you get rich!

Tell me what keywords you would LOVE to dominate on Google. Give me a handful of them. Then i will give you specific instructions on how to rank multiple FREE web 2.0 sites near the top of each of the results for those keywords. I have done this with my business' preferred keywords with tremendous success. You can use my primary email at danny@mindriches.com so that we won't have to log on here to find one another.

    Why would you not share your knowledge online for others to benefit from?

    Dr. Gary, what's great about nobosh Answers is that the community shares knowledge. Anyone who is not willing to submit their knowledge for the community to comment on isn't giving quality knowledge. That's not my opinion, that's fact.
  2. drgary: Nverfollow - I am definitely willing to share knowledge as well as many of the mistakes I have made. When we discuss proposing something to an individual like your friends at Yahoo or Google - I would be more comfortable discussing that privately and later discuss online how it worked out so everyone can learn from it. I am new to nobosh Answers so thanks for giving me the heads-up.
  3. drgary: Danny - sounds like you are quite familiar with this process. I would love to dominate - ergonomic chair, back pain, ergonomic seating, computer chair, doctors stool - those would be a few of the good ones. Thanks for your help.

  4. WealthMentor: nverfollow - I would love to give this out online. No problem. Only that I won't have the time to help each person individually dominate the keywords of their choice. I do teach a lot of online marketing techniques (free) on my youtube channel. However, I am not sure if I am supposed to post it here. I stepped out to help someone and it seems my response has gotten poor ratings...? Is that because I said I would consult with him privately?
  5. bahellman: Danny, I can't speak for everyone. But I do believe keeping conversations publicly benefit the entire community. Even though the advice you give Dr. Gary will be specific to his needs, the discussion will still be useful to those who chose to read, choose to Google search and find the page etc.. In the end, everyone wins. IMO
