I have $87k in credit card debt and make $5k a month. Should I file bankruptcy and start over?

The creditors won't stop calling which is making me lose my mind. I've done everything I can think of. No matter what I do my cost of living is higher than the money I bring home. I'm a single mom. What do I do??

Bankruptcy is most likely not the option for you. Bankruptcy is a nightmare to go through and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, especially someone in your position.

You're making 5k a month, 60k a year. You need to get a handle on your credit card spending. STOP using credit cards. I mean it. You need to set a budget and change the way you live. Granted I don't know how you obtained this debt. If the debt racked up from eating out or buying toys you need to change. If the debt racked up due to health issues or an unforeseen life changing event, we can fix this problem.

Do you have any assets? An expensive car perhaps? Sell what you can to pay down as much of this debt as possible. Call your creditor and do whatever it takes to have them lower your interest rate.

I can't imagine why someone in your position would ever need to be considering filing for bankruptcy. If I'm missing a detail, do tell me.

  1. eileenfisher: I own a new Lexus, which is almost paid off. I have considered selling the car for something more modest however, the issue is that the business I am in requires an upper scale style.

What I don't understand is what is so wrong with filing for Bankruptcy, what's wrong with wanting a fresh start? I do realize I need to stop with the credit cards. Its an obvious truth which I need to hear, thank you.

I know that it would be difficult to part with your Lexus, but you can rent nice cars for fairly reasonable fees when you need them for high profile clients. Every other day, you can drive a nice, economical car. That way, you'll be able to claim the car rentals on your business expenses!

Good luck!
