How do you manage really smart people, geniuses?

My engineering team has several team members that are considered geniuses in their respected areas. These members often have their own way of doing things and need to be individually managed with constant attention and care. How can you make managing geniuses the same as a normal employee?

The honest answer is that you can't. These people are extremely valuable to your business and they want to be recognized for it. For them, I recommend one on one relationship with managers, so no big group meetings unless is a policy change. However, they need to be held accountable just as any other employee would. Make sure every thing you need them to do is clearly stated, preferably written. You may need to hire a personal assistant for them - maybe one assistant for one to three of your geniuses - to help them with the more social aspects of the workplace.

I hope that helps! (My experience as a friend of such people - I tend to help them take care of reality.)

You manage "geniuses" the same way you manage any other employee. With respect. If the core values of your business are strong, it makes it that much easier. The vision of the company is the most important part of any company. This should be the yard stick in which you measure your employees. Geniuses or not, if they are hindering the forward movement of the company, they should not be there. If they are working to build the business, then you may want to hear them out and see what the conflict is. Respect your employees, not matter their IQ.
