How do you fire an employee?

How do you fire a direct report?

I'm no Donald Trump and don't have a lot of experience around this issue. Unlike Mr. Trump, I want to be sensitive to this employee and handle the termination appropriately for for him and the company.

The person in question is being let go for performance reasons. For what my company pays this employee we need someone capable of higher performance and a stronger inner drive that this person has not demonstrated over the last year.

Thank you

  1. eabbeb1: Be honest and approach this person with the reason for the dismissal. Suggest a job placement agency/counseling and give this person what is due him/her in vacation pay, etc. Allow him/her to leave on good terms which will facilitate him/her in finding new employment. Never burn your bridges, this person needs guidance and can turn out to be your best advocate when he/she finally achieves potential. It is never easy to dismiss an employee for whatever reason - do it face to face with honesty
  2. WealthMentor: As a former VP of a public company I have dealt with terminations hundreds of times and usually over performance. Depending on the agreement you have with this employee - you may need adequate documentation of under-performance. If you have this then make sure you refer to it often during the termination. If you don't, I strongly suggest you get some FIRST. Either way, do it professionally and with as little angst as you can. The only nice way to do it is to do it honestly. Danny
