How do I choose the right health insurance for my needs?

What important factors do I need to think about when choosing a health insurance plan? If I think my health insurance plan isn't working for me, how can I change? Generally, about how much money of a healthy individual's income is spent on health insurance and related expenses?

If you can sign onto the health insurance provided by your employer - this is probably the route you should go with because it will be the cheapest. If you're self-employed or your employer does not offer health insurance, you'll have to shop around.

A few things to keep in mind as you're choosing an insurance carrier and specific plan?
- How much do you currently use health care services? How much will you need to use health care services in the near future?
- If you have preexisting conditions, be careful - a lot of insurances will not cover these costs.
- Are you single or do you need to look for health insurance that covers dependents?
- Compare benefits and coverage of key items: monthly premiums, deductibles, co-payments, prescription costs, immunizations, physical exams, preventative care, etc. Rate these in terms of importance to you and/or your family and see which plan provides the best coverage of the items that are most often utilized. Think about any special types of care that you might need (fertility, long-term care, etc.)
- If you already have a doctor you like, find out if he/she is covered by this insurance. If not, can your current provider recommend a doctor that is covered? Is there one in your area so you won't have to drive too far? Are there nearby facilities that accept this insurance in case of an emergency?
- Keep asking questions! When it comes to health insurance, doing your research can help you get the best coverage for yourself and your family.
