The key to a successful site is content. Great content does the following: keeps users coming back, ends up being linked to by other sites/blogs, and ranks better in search engines.
The most popular method as of late is to use pay per click advertising which display in the search engine results page such as Google and Yahoo!.
- Google Adwords: http://www.google.com/adwords
- Yahoo Search Marketing: http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/
Next, make it easy for your users to remember your site through RSS feeds and bookmarks. Add the ability for your users to recommend content to community platforms such as Digg and Reddit.
Search engines provide a huge opportunity and necessity for you to promote your site. Improve your Search Engine Rankings by performing Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
- SEOmoz - has several tools and techniques available to improve your rankings.
Next, send out a free press release on the web. If your release ends up in Google News or Yahoo News, you'll end up with a nice traffic spike.

Start posting links to your site appropriately on the web. Add a link to your site in your signature. When you send an email or post a comment online appropriately stamp your signature.
Promotions work well. Offer a enticing giveaway to the X person who registers on such an such date etc..
Lastly, create a sitemap file to tell the major search engines about your site's pages. Sitemaps help speed up the discovery process of your page, getting your content in the search engine rankings faster.

It depends on what your business is - but the key is to find out where your potential customers hang out online and be there. Wherever they are, participate actively. Your customers may fall into different niches - have a presence in blogs, email lists, social networking sites that relate to your niches. Don't just throw up a press release on a social networking site. Always provide value, be useful, and think of the long term customer relationship. Consider article marketing on sites with an audience geared to business and good PageRank such as
Work.com (I am community manager for Work.com). Create a blog that offers useful info to potential customers. Answer questions on answer sites. Provide useful content and people will find you and what you are selling.
