Does anyone have experience with encrypted email security?

I'm searching for solutions to enable secure email for legal reasons around the health care industry. How do such services operate? I'm currently using a hosted environment solution for email via ms exchange server.

Is there some type of add-on I'll need? Thanks

I've been looking into the following two solutions so far:
http://www.certifiedmail.com/
http://www.zixcorp.com/solutions/ee_zixmail.php

  1. BobJanacek: I would definitely go with http://www.certifiedmail.com. Then again, maybe I'm a bit biased. All the best, Bob Janacek - CTO CertifiedMail.com Inc.
  2. bahellman: Bob, my exchange mail servers are being hosted right now. Is your product an add-on or sorts, something my current hosted mail provider would need to install, or a solution that would require me to move my mail system completely to your system? Do you have a lot of health care clients? Any additional additional detail would be welcomed as well as health care testimonials, case studies, white papers, etc...

I would use the e-mail program Thunderbird with the Enigmail extension. With enigmail and gpg (Gnu Provacy Guard) you will be able to automatically encrypt and decrypt with a passphrase.

  1. jrglasgow: here is a tutorial

  2. bahellman: jrglasgow, thanks for the answers. Question.. Will enigmail work with MS Exchange Server? I currently use both outlook and Entourage to access the mail server. Also, what about mail that is sent via Blackberry or a Treo?
  3. jrglasgow: If you can set your exchange server for IMAP and access the server that way it will work with thunderbird and Enigmail.

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is the commercial implementation fo the standard that GPG uses (PGP was actually the first implementation GPG is just free). PGP offers a blackerry solution that is fully compatible with GPGimplementations

I haven't seen any solutions that have been built for the Palm Treo

In this series of 6 episodes the question of cryptographic security is brought up including e-mail security, they explain how strong cryptography works and explain PGP and GPG both.
