Can I use an already established tax number that I have to start a new business unrelated to the first?

If you are operating your business as a sole proprietorship or general partnership, your Social Security Number (SSN) is used as the Federal Tax ID Number for your business, so yes you sure can and will need to.

When you incorporate or form a limited liability company (LLC), you must obtain a new EIN for your business.
