Are the Yellow Pages dead?

With search engines, online local directories, mobile 411, etc. is advertising in the Yellow Pages still worth it?

Comments

  1. TonyLiu: What are you looking to advertise?
  2. imaginal: more of a general question. When a friend who is opening a salon showed me the rates for a Yellow Page ad, I was floored and was wondering if that money wouldn't be better served elsewhere.
  3. TonyLiu: That depends on the demo your friend is looking to bring into the salon. If they are looking for an older demo, I'd see the Yellow Pages as a decent advertising placing. Just ask YP for their market demographic. If your friend is looking for a younger demo, under 24, they'd be better off with Radio Ads (which google has and are quiet reasonable). Or even targeted geographic ads on facebook, which are again great value for the money.

I can't remember the last time I've used the Yellow Pages directly. But doesn't maps services such as Y! Maps and Google Maps use the YP data? I believe so.

Regarding advertising, I think it depends on your customer demographic. If you are marketing to a younger audience probably not. if you are marketing to an older audience for labor services like tire service, it seems to make better sense to me. I was able to search and find that Yellow Pages advertising has dropped 20% in the last three years. Perhaps the prices offer a bigger bang for the buck..

  1. imaginal: Not sure where the map sites get their initial info, but I know you can edit and add listings. Thanks. Do you mean that the price of advertising has dropped 20% or how many people are actually advertising has dropped 20%?
