What about an online saving account from ING Direct? An large account (100k) with ING direct can yield 3.6%.
I will say if you are under 45 playing it might not make sense for your play it safe. One of the things we learned from the first stock market crash is that the markets recover overtime. If you have a long time to retire and the stomach to handle the doom and gloom on CNN, I'd suggest buying index funds and waiting out the financial troubles. That's what I'm doing with my money.
