Which advertising mediums tend to have the lowest cost per lead relative to each other?

I've been having a hard time finding independent/accurate data comparing the cost-per-lead of various local advertising mediums such as radio, newspaper, targeted direct mailings, local periodicals, local TV etc. Can anyone refer me to a trustworthy source that has accurate information on the subject and isn't trying to sell me a service?

We've been keeping records of our past advertising efforts at the small medical practice I work for and have seen the best returns on our direct mailings, web marketing, and phonebook ads. Local periodicals have had horrible returns in general, and especially for their high cost. This process is very tedious, wasteful and feels a bit like we're paying a lot to re-invent the wheel though so I was hoping someone could direct me to a resource that might help me make some well-informed advertising decisions.

Take a look at the chart here: http://battellemedia.com/archives/000806.php

Paid search is the way to go. The costs go down as you continue to optimize your campaign. Simply buying words is useless. You need to build custom landing pages, which give better experiences to customers and even lower your prices.
